John's Story

Ok, I left California for Tucson, AZ. after graduation from Cubberley. Majored in Speech, then Spanish and German at the University of Arizona. Organized and participated in musical, artistic and social/political activities around the University of Arizona community. Ended up graduating from the College of Education and went to the University of Stuttgart on a full scholarship exchange. Was deferred from the draft for Viet Nam because of joint and heart issues after three pre-induction physicals. Met lots of exciting people in government, education and social service. Got knocked flat by the love of my life after she refused my third proposal and a red diamond engagement ring. Rebounded, married a talented but head strong artist, had two boys and was divorced after 10 years of ups and downs while I was teaching school and working weekend jobs. Taught Spanish and German at the University, high School and all subjects at middle school levels all during this. Loved tennis, but failed to become a nationally ranked player in college. Saw an old Cubberley team mate who had gotten a bit chubby (George Todd, class of 64), who had a van and was still courting the more outrageous women. Remember George? He was on the tennis and basketball teams and made a great win one night by hurling the ball from the opposite court in the last second of the game. Didn't stay in touch with many of my high school friends to my own detriment. Dated V. Brichta once, went home with her after school and met her Dad who was an electronics and communications genious! Still admire and help my boys' mother who has moved from Tucson to Bellingham, Washington. Got about a hundred pounds overweight during a Fulbright Teachers' Exchange in a Bavarian village in Germany, teaching English and Spanish at the Local Gimnasium. Lost too much money to admit at the casinos. Helped several individuals with their financial crises, ignoring my own. Became a grandpa to Efren, by my second son's marriage. Donated platelets for cancer patients...Expand for more
on a regular basis. Sold my 8 inch telescope and am sorry I missed the first deep space conference in Europe this year. My passport is ready. Got screwed by a local plumbing company who connected the hot to the cold water pipes and wouldn't admit it for too long and learned that we need more regulation and consumer protection in most states because they are afraid to hold business accountable for greed and mistakes. Love my life and friends and children and am looking for some harmless adventure. Hit 73 years of age in February of 2019 and still feel like there's a teenager inside. Hear from Mike Kaku once in a great while. I really admired his focus and vision for his destiny in physiics, following the trail of Einstein and making a few tracks of his own. Old dogs died off, two of them at 18 years, one at 13--I loved you, dear Rosebud!--and Kirby, who left me after almost making it to 23. Got a crazy white standard poodle now, Evel. Stopped donating platelets when cardigram showed a branch block, but no heart attack, no pain. Learning about the relationship of vitaminD3 and vitaminK2&7 from Menaquinone (everyone in our class still standing should find out about this) Oh yeah, add one more grandkid after Ahvi, his sister born on my birthday 2017, same year Dr. Cohen gave me new mobility with a nifty hip replacement; walked 8000 steps that weekend. Oldest son, Dan, finished a year as a uniformed crewman aboard Kismet 1, a yacht leased by billionaire, Shahid Khan, a pretty nice guy from what my son says. Dan's a totally committed vegetarian now with his Captain's papers from the Coast Guard. Currently, he was on the coast of Veracruz, Mexico, but now he’s married to another premed student and lives in the woods on Cornell’s campus while working to finish his degree, yeah then come the M-cats Didn't say much when I was in high school in the 60's but have a lot more to say now. And looking very much forward to chewing the fat with 60s Cubberley students in future reunions. Hello to all! John
